Team USA Wins Fifth Straight Master'U BNP Paribas Title
Share:

Team USA prolonged its reign at the Master'U BNP Paribas Championship, capturing gold for the fifth straight year.

The Americans defeated Great Britain 4-1 in the championship match on Sunday in Reims, France to clinch their 12th title overall in the 17-year-history of the event.

Team USA consisted of Michigan senior Gavin Young, Texas junior Sebastian Gorzny, Pepperdine senior Savannah Broadus, UC Santa Barbara senior Amelia Honer, Texas A&M senior Mary Stoiana and Columbia junior Michael Zheng. The head coaches were Robin Stephenson (Washington) and Andrew Rueb (Harvard). Broadus, Stoiana and Young all returned from the team that won gold last year.

The Master’U BNP Paribas Championship brings together some of the top collegiate players from around the world. Thirty current and former NCAA players competed in this year’s event. Seven of the eight participating countries featured players who play for or have played for NCAA institutions, including the entire rosters of the United States and Australia.

In the championship against Great Britain, three of the four singles matches went to a match tiebreak. Zheng beat James Story 3-6, 6-4, 10-7, Gorzny beat Finn Bass 6-7 (11), 6-3, 10-6, Broadus beat Eliz Maloney 6-3, 7-6(3) and Honer lost to Amelia Rajecki 1-6, 6-3, 10-8. Gorzny and Young clinched the title in doubles with a 7-5, 6-2 win over Bass and Story.

“Tired. Excited. Just relieved to get over the finish line,” Gorzny told an on-site reporter after the match. “My first time here and Gavin’s second time winning it. But I’m very happy with the result.”

To reach the final, Team USA beat France 4-1 in the semifinals and Germany 4-1 in the opening round.

“I think the biggest thing is we just really enjoy ourselves,” Young said. “We have a lot of fun out here, and I think that’s the most important thing.”
