Nikol Davletshina is the new USTA Girls 14s Clay Courts singles champion, while London Evans and Zoe Young emerged as doubles champs in Plantation, Florida.
Davletshina Wins the Clays 14s
The eighth-seeded Davletshina (Boca Raton, Florida) defeated No. 13 Juliana Diianni (Marietta, Georgia) 6-2, 1-6, 6-2 in the singles final at Frank Veltri Tennis Center.
Evans (Manchester, Missouri) and Young (Spring, Texas), seeded second in doubles, bested the No. 4 duo of Reena Alavalapati (Austin, Texas) and Eugenia Alvarez (San Antonio, Texas) 7-5, 6-1 to claim the tandem title.
"The tournament) got harder," said Davletshina, who picked up her first 14s gold ball. "I told myself, 'I've got this! Come on!' In the finals my 'weapons were my drop shots. I was pushing her and making her run to the net a lot. I also moved her around a lot."
It may have been Davletshina’s first 14s gold ball, but the talented player won many prestigious tournaments in 12s competitions. Her most recent came last December at the Junior Orange Bowl when she won the singles championship.
She also won the 18s at the Delray Championships, and the 16s events at the Bobby Curtis Championship and the Team Bryan Championships. All of this from a player who is about to enter the sixth grade!
In the semifinals Davletshina beat No. 10 Isha Manchala (Hilton Head Island, South Carolina) 6-2, 6-1.
Diianni also had some good wins in her run to the finals. In the semifinals she beat No. 33 Saraswati Gowda (Boynton, Beach Florida) 6-1, 6-2. Diiaani claimed a 6-2, 7-5 quarterfinals victory over No. 6 Natalie Frisbie (Gallatin, Tennessee), and a 6-4, 6-2 round of 16 win over the second-seeded Evans.
Third place in singles went to Manchaca with a 7-5, 6-3 decision over Gowda. The consolation draw was won by Frisbie who prevailed 1-6, 6-3 (10-5) over No. 33 Capri Butera (Carnegie, Pennsylvania).
Evans and Young are doubles champions
The Clay Courts doubles marked the first time Evans and Young had teamed up as a duo.
"Zoe and I were effective because we looked for opportunities to move forward and be aggressive at the net," said Evans, who won the singles crown at the 14s USTA Winter Championships. "We made adjustments when things weren’t working, and stayed positive throughout the match."
Young has three gold balls, including the doubles title of the 14s USTA National Doubles Championship.
"We looked for opportunities to move forward and be aggressive at the net," Young said. "We adjusted when things weren’t working and stayed positive."
Evans and Young advanced to the doubles championship with a 6-4, 7-5 win over No. 5 Christina Li (Bradenton, Florida) and Kyndall Noel (Winston-Salem, North Carolina).
Alavalapati and Alvarez won their semifinals matchup 6-2, 6-3 with Sophia Khomoutov (Chicago, Illinois) and Adriana Khomyakova (Port Saint Lucie, Florida).
Li and Noel defeated Khmoutov and Khomyakova 6-1, 4-6, 6-3 in the doubles third-place playoff.
The tournament Sportsmanship Award was presented to Micaela Navarro (Palm Beach Gardens, Florida).
