For Clervie Ngounoue, the return to junior tennis competition could not have been more successful, with the 16-year-old from Florida adding the singles and doubles titles at the International Tennis Federation's J300 tournament in San Diego to the championships she won at the ITF J300 in Indian Wells the week before. For top seed Kaylan Bigun, San Diego was a milestone, with the 16-year-old from California taking his first title at that level with a 7-5, 6-1 win over No. 2 seed Roy Horovitz.

Ngounoue described the week in San Diego as "complicated," which was an apt description for a tournament besieged by rain the first four days. Morning delays led to countless matches under the lights and two or three matches a day, but the weekend was cool and dry, allowing the tournament to finish as scheduled.
The weather may have been disruptive, but it didn't keep the second-seeded Ngounoue from cruising to the finals without the loss of a set, dispatching No. 4 seed Ariana Pursoo 6-3, 6-3 in the semifinals. Iva Jovic, the top seed, also dominated the competition, losing only 10 games in her first five victories, then claiming a 6-1, 6-4 win over No. 4 seed Tatum Evans in the semifinals.
