Top-Ranked Blumberg Chooses Carolina Blue

As he considered his options for college, Blue Chip William Blumberg encountered a problem.

"I had an issue of every time I'd go to a school, I'd like that one the best," said the 18-year-old from Greenwich, Connecticut. "I didn't know why that was, it was just happening. I visited, and I liked them all."

Blumberg considered Duke, USC, Wake Forest, Stanford, Virginia and North Carolina, before finally paring his choice down to the Cavaliers and Tar Heels.

"For whatever reasons, I ended up liking Virginia and UNC the most. I like Coach [Sam] Paul a lot and Tripp [Phillips] is probably my favorite coach I've ever met, and I really liked the team," Blumberg said. "I got down to those schools, visited back-to-back originally. I really liked Virginia as well. I have tons of friends on the team, Luca [Corinteli], Henrik [Wiersholm], who I grew up with, and obviously that program is incredible with Coach [Brian] Boland and D[ustin]T[aylor].

"So it was a really hard decision at the end. But I felt like I fit in at North Carolina, and I felt the family-ness of the team [was something] I really liked at North Carolina. I felt like that was where I really belonged, so I'm excited."

Blumberg, No. 1 on the Head Class Rankings List for the Class of 2017, will be joining North Carolina in January. He is taking courses this summer at Greenwich High School, where he returned after over four years of online schooling, and where he'll finish his senior year this fall.

"I don't think there's anything very normal about our life, and I think that's one of the reasons I went back to school," said Blumberg, who has been ranked as high as No. 4 in the International Tennis Federation world junior rankings and qualified for the ITF Junior Masters this spring in China.

"It's a different learning environment. History class, English class, hearing other people's opinions, having a discussion with another human being. You have a teacher. At the time, I needed that. I was able to go to China and do other things, so I thought I could get the best of both worlds."

Blumberg, who has taken high school courses in marketing, business and finance, believes sports marketing could tie together his interests.
