Luke Sanderson (Wheatfield, Ind.)

Three-star junior Luke Sanderson credits his recent success to changes in his mental game. With the help of his advisor and good friend, John Israel, Sanderson has developed a new outlook that has aided him with tennis.

"[Israel] has helped me with my mental game and my approach to life - and helped me become a more positive and happier person," said Sanderson.

Another recent change has also helped the six-foot-three recruit with his game. "Luke has really focused in on his game this fall," said his father and coach, Reggie Sanderson. "He has been working on not only improving certain areas of his tennis but his fitness as well. He decided to forgo his junior year of high school tennis to make these improvements and play more elevated USTA events. This has paid off."

Recently, Luke and Reggie Sanderson have been working to improve Luke's game and help him develop deeper and more penetrating shots. "We are also working on my net game and my offensive game," said the younger Sanderson. "Also, my fitness is improving - which is vital to my game."

Sanderson highlights his strengths as his serve and his forehand. "I like to play a smart game and wear my opponent down," he said. "I also like to grind when it is necessary."

The Wheatfield native had a chance to show off these strengths in a match last month at a USTA Midwest Section Level 5. Sanderson faced four-star sophomore Nathan Griffin in the semifinals. "[Griffin] is an excellent player, and I really had to earn every point," Sanderson said. "We stayed at the baseline and grinded it out, and I was able to come up with the right shots to win the match."

Sanderson pulled out the win, 6-3, 6-1. "Every point was like a battle, and for me to defeat him three and one really has boosted my confidence and my game," he said. He went on to defeat three-star senior Canyon Teague to secure the championship, bringing his total record for the month of September to 7-1.

Sanderson is not only a promising player, but he also enjoys giving back. He comes from a family of tennis players, with his father as his coach, a mother who also plays, and sisters Katee Sanderson (number one at Saint Joe College) and three-star eighth grader Molly Sanderson. His father, however, is his main source of contribution to the community.

"I run several grass roots tennis programs in our community, and Luke loves to help teach," Reggie Sanderson said. "He has always been willing to give his time and knowledge of the game freely to others. He not only takes the time to help beginning juniors but is more than willing to hit and play with adults when asked. He doesn't just play tennis, he lives it."
