Just as they get ready to host the next NCAA Division I Championships, the Fighting Illini also secured the No. 6 position of the Men's Recruiting Class rankings with the addition of Blue Chip senior Brian Page, Jr.
The decision to go to the University of Illinois was given a lot of consideration by Page, who says he was "considering
Georgia,
Texas A&M, and Illinois."
He has already established ties to the Illini. He is being coached at XTreme Tennis at Glenview Racquet Club by former Illinois player Billy Heiser. Also training there is Jared Hiltzik, another incoming freshman to the team. The duo is already in the team spirit, picking up the bronze ball in doubles at the National Spring Championships in March.
Tennis certainly runs in the Page family. Brian Page, Sr. played for Clemson University from 1985-88, before turning professional the summer after his junior year (he later returned to complete his degree). Page, Sr. competed on the ATP tour and was a top 10 leader in career doubles wins with a 104-55 before turning his interest to coaching.
Brian Page, Sr. also assists in his son's coaching, which included practicing with top ATP touring pro Kei Nishikori, who was in the Chicago area this past December to work with a physical fitness specialist.
The younger Page keeps up his fitness and has in fact recently even worked with heavyweight contender "Fast" Fres Oquendo on some boxing moves to help improve his footwork.
