During her playing career at Vanderbilt University, Georgina Sellyn suffered injuries that required multiple surgeries. Although the setbacks were frustrating, they unexpectedly opened a door to the medical field, which became her new passion and career path.
Sellyn, 31, is now a resident physician at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. The Glasgow, Scotland native received a bachelor’s degree in cognitive neuroscience and a master’s in medicine, health, and society from Vanderbilt, and was a multiple-time SEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year and all-academic selection.
Sellyn pursued her medical education at the Vanderbilt School of Medicine. She studied for the MCAT between her research job and a tennis coaching job once her college playing career ended. Intertwining her love for tennis and preventative health, Sellyn helped spearhead an initiative that raised awareness for skin cancer prevention at tennis tournaments.
Sellyn and her mother moved to the United States from Scotland when Sellyn was 16 to further her tennis career. She reached a career-high singles ranking of No. 48 in 2014 while playing for the Commodores.
Sellyn shares more about her current life and tennis memories in this month’s edition of “Where Are They Now?”
