It was an odd birthday wish from a 10-year-old.
Cortland Grove didn’t want a video game, an upgraded phone or a new racket. Grove wanted to be homeschooled. He was already spending a lot of time traveling to tournaments and didn’t want to miss any classes in regular school hours.

“I realized if I was enjoying tennis this much, I wanted to stick with it and do it more,” he said. “I have always been a very independent person anyway.”
Grove will be returning to a regular school setting in a few months. The four-star senior from Suwanee, Georgia has signed with Chattanooga.
From the moment he began corresponding with head coach Chuck Merzbacher, Grove felt a strong connection.
“I felt like we communicated really well and when I got up there he was straight forward and told me what I could do for the team,” Grove said. “On my official visit, I connected with the guys very well too. And Chattanooga is close to home. It’s about two hours away from where I grew up and it’s always nice being close to family.”
