We talked to a few of these top performers:

Aidan William (West Lafayette, Indiana)

Aidan William distinguished himself in the month of July.

First, the 5-foot-10 right-hander reached the singles final of the ITA Summer Circuit at Notre Dame. Then, the three-star rising senior captured the Cracked Racquets ITA Summer Circuit title at Carmel, Indiana.

His wins propelled him from No. 180 to No. 158 in the TennisRecruiting.net Rankings. William has produced a recent record of 9-1.

“I credit my good play to the work I put in during the winter and spring, physically and mentally leading up to the summer,” said William. “My serve was never a strong point in my game, so during the winter I worked with one of my coaches, completely changed it and made it a lot better.

“I also put a lot of time into my mental game, and the mindset I brought into my matches was a lot different than the mindset I had during the indoor season.”

William said his best victory was over Eli Mercer in the Cracked Racquets final. The two are close friends and they know the match strategy of each other. William prevailed 7-6 (5), 6-0 in the championship matchup.

William works out at the Schwartz Tennis Center at Purdue University. His coaches are Joe Braden, Tim Madden, and Dani Vidal. Williams also trains at the Smith Tennis Program in Indianapolis, with Bryan Smith and Stephanie Hazlett.

William said he is working with his coaches on his serve and footwork. He also has focused on getting to the net, and finishing there to help with his singles and doubles games.

William is a lifelong resident of West Lafayette, located on the Wabash River and the home of Purdue. He is a member of the West Lafayette High School team, and definitely wants to play college tennis.

Last June, William played in the World Team Tennis Junior Nationals held at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Florida. The Central Indiana team emerged as the championship squad.

William’s parents are Colin and Jennifer William, and his dad taught him the game of tennis at age 5.

“Aidan enjoys every opportunity he can find to play tennis as a team sport,” his parents said. “His biggest achievement came this summer at the World Team Tennis Junior Nationals. That whole week was one of friendship and camaraderie, a once-in-a-lifetime experience for all.

“The emphasis on his serve and on his focus has been important, and is starting to pay off. This summer came with the pressure of knowing that college coaches are watching him and following his results. He’s risen to the challenge that goes with the pressure.”

William summarized what distinguishes him from other players.

“I think I am a very smart player on the court,” William said. “I can beat people who might have better strokes than me by outsmarting them, and figuring out how to win. That can drive other people crazy, especially if they feel like they should be beating me easily.”
