KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men’s and women’s teams arrive in Kalamazoo for the NCAA Division III quarterfinals next Monday as the top seeds, with each having just one loss on the season. But the teams that delivered those losses have also earned their way to the Elite Eight, and with 15 of the 16 seeds winning their regionals, a competitive three days is expected.
“It’s pretty wide open,” said Kalamazoo College women’s coach Mark Murphy, who led the administration of the NCAA tournament in Kalamazoo in 2013 and 2016 and is back in that role again this year. “I would say any of the top four or five teams can probably win it. Part of it is matchups; matchups are bigger than ever before and these teams all know each other so well. It’s about depth and doubles. We’re still doing nine-point matches, different than D-I, and you can sweep the doubles, win just two singles matches and still win the match.”
