A year ago, Juncheng “Jerry” Shang was living in his native China.
He and his family decided a move to the United States would greatly enhance his tennis prowess.
After a stay in Laguna Beach, Calif., the family moved to Naples, Fla., and Shang became part of the Sanchez Casal Tennis Academy. The decision proved invaluable because the unseeded Shang emerged as the singles title holder of the USTA Boys’ 12 National Clay Court Championships.
Shang defeated fourth-seeded Aidan Kim of Milford, Mich., 6-3, 7-5 last Saturday at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Fla. The victory marked the first gold ball for Shang, who did not drop a set in the national event.
